Hanami

Hanami is a traditional celebration for the cherry blossom in Japan. It exists since the 8th century and is one of the most important celebration in Japan therefore why the people of Japan and tourists have to celebrate it.

When the first cherry blossom blooms, then the Hanami will be celebrated but it depends on in which city it is because the cherry blossom doesn’t bloom everywhere at the same time.

The word "Hanami" means as much as "to observe blossoms". So when you celebrate Hanami, you have to picnic under a cherry tree and to view the cherry blossoms. During the picnic people drink mostly are tea and soft drinks and what they like to eat are:

  • Filled bentos (it can be filled with e.g. rice, sushi, …)
  • Mostly desserts such as dangos, sakura mochis (Wagashi)
  • Snacks that are themed with sakura (e.g. Sakura KitKat)
